As part of this year’s Reading Challenge, we invited 135 Northland school kids to swap their classroom for the kitchen, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making our delicious HELL pizzas before having a crack themselves.
Because they don’t live close enough to a HELL store to redeem their reading wheels*, and because we heard they put in such an awesome effort this year, we sent a bus to bring this bunch of big-time bookworms to our Whangarei HELL hole, where they learnt some of our devilish secrets.
Every child got the chance to make and bake their very own pizza – and eat it fresh out of the oven!
Denise Hadwin, a teacher at Paihia School, said that the Whangarei trip made for an unforgettable day.
“The kids thought it was amazing — the best trip of their lives! They all enjoyed learning what goes on and having a go at their own creations. The staff were fun and super-friendly.”
She says the Reading Challenge has been a big hit with kids in her class over the past few years.
“They really enjoy filling out their wheels, so much so that they take their reading home.”
How the Reading Challenge works
· For each book read, kids get a stamp on their HELL ‘pizza wheel’ – a cardboard disc distributed by participating schools and libraries. The completed and approved wheel (showing seven books read) can then be taken into a HELL store to be redeemed for a free, freshly cooked ‘333 HELLthy Kids’ Pizza’.
Facts about Reading Challenge:
· Over 300,000 pizza wheels were distributed in 2019, to 698 participating schools and 223 public libraries.
· The HELL Reading Challenge continues to inspire young Kiwis to read more books – over six million since its launch in 2014.
